Book #Sale: Celebrating 12 Days of Interred with @LynAlmodovar

12 Days of Interred continues with

Mara’s Interment (a short story)

.

My skin is still red from all the scrubbing. Even now, standing in the waiting room, I can feel it tingling.

Not far from me, the Attenborough twins talk incessantly about Andrew Jacobs. I bite my tongue, drawing blood. The mere mention of his name causes me to swear out loud and that’s the last thing I need today.

“Mara Huxtable,” the woman calls my name, and carefully, I walk to the door, still wearing the white bathrobe with the letter “I” embroidered in gold over my chest.

I follow her through the long corridor until she stops. On the door, the family motto, Fide et Marte, is written on cardboard with a poorly designed family crest. Taking a deep breath, I push the door open and smile. It’s not difficult to smile when everyone expects you to be pleased. It just hurts your insides because you don’t feel a thing.

My grandmother, Eleanor Huxtable, is sitting in the big armchair beside the fire. On the other side of her, my mother and father wait. I can see my dad’s eyes glistening with tears as he grins my way. My mother, though clearly moved, remains standing stoic, her expression neutral, but her eyes threatening to let the dam open.

“I’m leaving. Just wanted to give you this.” My father smiles as he moves closer to me and gives me a quick hug, of which I know grandmother Huxtable disapproves.

“What is it?” I ask, frowning. Usually my birthday is celebrated a week before it really is. For one, mortals don’t know about the Magical World, and two, my birthday is on October 31st, a very sacred date in our world. It’s the night when we remember those who have died because of magic.

The fact that my interment is on Halloween makes the occasion that much more solemn. There is a ball to celebrate our Magical gifts. The American Council leaders will be speaking about our past and the way the future should be.

Even if it’s a celebration, it doesn’t go unnoticed that since the English Council Leaders and others who disapprove of the New York Council’s Absorber leaders are here, everyone is on high alert. The last time they joined us, there was a massacre.

My father places a gold chain around my neck as I stare at the beautiful locket. It has gardenia flowers engraved on the gold metal, and my name on the other side with my birthday.

“It’s beautiful.” I smile as he hugs me again before quickly walking to the door. I see him wiping away tears.

“Now…do you have a partner for the ball?” my grandmother asks matter-of-fact, sitting and holding onto her cane.

I see that she’s wearing the onyx pendant. The damn thing is never off her neck. People in the family believe she’s in touch with the boy associated with it, which is slightly creepy. A woman of her age shouldn’t be hanging around a sixteen-year-old boy.

“No,” I reply when I hear the cane banging against the floor, clearly to make me divert my attention back to her.

“Well, it’s a good thing that we asked Andrew Jacobs to escort you then,” she says.

My eyes widen and I turn sharply toward my mother, who smiles and moves closer to me. “The Council approved it,” she says.

As she takes my hand, I really want to ask what the hell they’re thinking. Instead, I ask, “Did the English approve it?” I ignore my grandmother and stare right into my mother’s eyes.

“Yes,” she says, clearing her throat before leading me to the divider where the beautiful blue dress she sewed for me is hanging.

“Are they mad? Have they lost the little shred of humanity that they had?” I ask in a muted whisper.

She cups my cheek with her hand. “Darling, listen to me,” she whispers as her eyes glitter in the light. “The Readers know of your abilities.”

“What?” My voice is louder than I want it to be as panic courses through me.

“After my mother told us, she had to inform them.”

I swallow hard as I look at the floor.

“Mara,” she says softly, “you belong to one of the oldest families in the Magical community. The Huxtables have always been very powerful, and my family leads the Puerto Rican Council. No one will ever harm you.”

“But he’s an Absorber.”

She smiles. “You used to like him.”

“That was a mistake,” I huff. I grit my teeth as she smiles and moves to the other side of the partition.

“Maybe not,” she calls.

I shake my head before moving to grab the dress. Once I’m changed, I stare at my reflection and sigh. I smooth the skirt of my dress and then walk out and see Eleanor’s face twitch. Fearing the worst, I brace myself for more disapproval. The fact that my main ability will be Necromancy hasn’t settled well with her or the Huxtables. They fear reprisals from the English Council…a loss of position or something even more dramatic. I wouldn’t mind watching her getting a dress-down.

“Where is her head?” I hear Grandmother say as I roll my eyes.

“I’m right here.”

“I’m talking and you’re ignoring me then?” she asks.

My cheeks burn. “No, ma’am.”

She frowns. “Madam.”

“No, madam,” I repeat. She smiles one of her twisted smiles which usually foretell pain coming my way.

“I said Andrew is outside. He’ll escort you to the Power Room. Once you’re done there, you’ll join the ball,” she says, standing up. “Make sure that you pass the Interment with high marks. Your mother and father would be disappointed otherwise,” she adds before she walks out of the room.

As the door closes, I spy Andrew standing outside with my father, dressed in a tux, looking more handsome than the last time that I saw him.

“Ass,” I mutter.

My mother smiles as she approaches me. She pins my hair back with one of the special barrettes she made for the dance. They have flowers and tiny blue sapphires on them.

“These are beautiful,” I say so I don’t say anything else about Jacobs.

“I don’t know what happened between the two of you,” she begins as I turn around to look at her. She runs a hand through my blonde ringlets. “You might feel different after tonight.”

“I don’t think so,” I say vehemently as she kisses my cheek and then grins.

“I’ll bet you twenty dollars you will,” she sing-songs on her way to the door.

I frown. “What do you know?” I ask, watching her, but she never slows down. My eyes move to Andrew, who is holding the door open for my mother. Clearly scoring points.

“You look…” he says breathlessly as he stares at me.

“What?” I say, glaring his way.

“Come on, Huxtable.” He grins and I can feel the smile chipping away at my annoyance, but stand my ground.

“I’m going to say this once, Jacobs. It’s never going to happen,” I declare, mainly because I’m still hurt that he broke up with me because he thought we should cool our relationship down before we ended up having to elope. I turn, walking out the door, ignoring the arm he’s offering me.

He lets out a slow whistle. “Good thing there’s no time,” he says as I glance at him and notice the grin on his face.

“Dream on. All you’re getting out of tonight is me stepping on your toes when we dance,” I say as I stalk away from him.

Excerpt from I Do

During their travels, Tate had met other Mercesti like Zachariah and his chosen class leaders. But then there were Mercesti like these, she thought sourly, bringing up her nunchucks to block a slicing sword. Mercesti who refused to fall in line with Zachariah’s leadership. Mercesti who thought they should have the right to take anything they wanted, including the lives of any Estilorians who got in their way.

Mercesti who stood between her and her wedding day.

This group was larger than most of the others had been, Tate observed as she used Tiege’s bent knee to launch herself at another opponent. They were also more trained and organized.

Their leader was a tall, dark-skinned male named Cain. Zachariah had barely approached Cain and introduced himself before the aggressive male and his followers raised their weapons to fight. It seemed they had already heard of Zachariah’s ascension to elder and had been seeking him out to challenge him. Now, Cain and Zachariah were battling across the forest clearing where the combat had initiated.

Fighting this group was the last thing Tate had wanted, though. She had even asked Zachariah to pass them by. After all, she, Zachariah, Tiege, Ariana, and the Mercesti who had been invited to the wedding were on their way to the protected area surrounding her family’s home. Her mother and aunts were all waiting for them to arrive to begin the celebration.

Her stubborn avowed could not be swayed, however. Tate wasn’t actually that upset about the delay. She was proud of Sparky’s determination to clean up his class and integrate them with the nine other Estilorian classes. But lord, she was tired.

She had lost count of the number of small battles they had waged since Eirik’s defeat. It felt as though they finished one battle, got a few hours of sleep, and headed on to the next. Yes, there were days when they met up with friendly Mercesti and took some time to introduce themselves and get to know them, but those moments hardly made up for the time they were fighting.

We’ll wrap this up soon enough, Beautiful.

Tate heard her avowed’s thought as she spun out of the way of an axe’s downward swing. Her gaze lifted to Zachariah’s across clearing. She realized she had unintentionally broadcasted her thoughts to him.

I know, Sparky, she returned.

If she could keep herself focused, she privately added.

Excerpt

He crossed his arms over his chest and stared at her. It was all she could do to keep her eyes on his face. She’d already seen the black tattoo on the inside of his left forearm that read Strength, but she hadn’t seen his others yet. Across his pecs was a longer tattoo, some sentence or phrase that she couldn’t read from where she stood. He had another one on his right bicep, high enough to be covered by a sleeve whenever he wore a shirt.

She wanted to run up to him and touch and examine every inch of his tanned skin, especially where his spectacular abs disappeared into a V where his towel cut him off. If she didn’t already look like a whacked out, creepy stalker, that would be sure to do the trick.

After a long moment, he said, “It’s not broken.”

Relief flooded through her, both because he apparently wasn’t filing charges and because Beck’s paw was only sprained. She went back down to her knees to pet him some more.

“I’m so glad to hear it. Did Dr. Paulk give you the anti-inflammatories?”

Evan made a face. “Yeah. When I tried to give one to Beck, he puked on me.”

She made a sound of sympathy and kissed the top of Beck’s head. “Poor thing. You’re not feeling well at all, are you, big guy?”

“You know, I’m the one who got puked on,” Evan grumbled.

That was way too good a segue to pass up. Getting to her feet, she slowly walked over to him. His eyebrow lifted.

“Poor, Evan,” she said, her eyes on his as she stopped in front of him. “You’ve had a rough couple of days, haven’t you, big guy?”

“You petted Beck,” he reminded her.

Smiling, she reached out and placed her palms on his chest. As she ran her hands over his hard muscles, she read his chest tattoo.

Play as if you’ll live forever.

“An oversight I’m happy to remedy,” she murmured, meeting his gaze as her right hand lowered to his abdomen. “How rough have you had it these past couple of days, Evan?”

He grabbed her hand when it reached the waistband of his towel. She hadn’t had any intention of going beneath it…this time. But it pleased her to look down and see the results of her touch on his body.

Figuring he wanted her to stop teasing him, she stepped away. He yanked her back against him and brought his mouth down on hers.

All sense of teasing was gone like a snap. Desire raged between them. The kiss was hot, open-mouthed, carnal. She buried her fingers in the hair at the base of his neck, barely aware when he reached down to lift her so that her legs wrapped around his waist. She just knew how happy she was to have even easier access to his fabulous mouth.

She met the thrust of his tongue with hers, mimicking the mating that they both clearly wanted. Soft moans and growls filled the room, none of them from the dogs. They backed against a wall. His lower body pressed hard against hers, the towel and her clothing suddenly unbearable barriers.

When she reached for the towel, he stopped her, breaking off the kiss. The sound of their ragged breathing blended with her pulse racing in her ears.

“Mother of God,” he panted, bracing himself against the wall. “I could take you right here.”

Excerpt:

“I know you’re not seeking any romantic connections right now, Everly,” Wyatt interrupted, giving Cole a quelling look. “We’re here in a strictly professional capacity.”

Now she looked more at ease. “I see. Are you seeking a consultation over Cole’s rotator cuff injury?”

Cole stiffened. He glared at Wyatt.

“I haven’t told her a thing,” Wyatt said with raised palms.

“You didn’t have to say anything,” she said with a shrug, leaning back against Rowan’s desk. Her keen gaze met Cole’s. “I noticed that you favored your left hand throughout your meal, using it to drink, eat, and bring your napkin to your mouth, but you’re a right-handed pitcher. And just now, when you moved to clear space on the couch, you stopped breathing and swallowed hard when you moved your right arm, telling me you’re hiding pain and have a reduced range of motion.”

His mouth opened over her observations. He looked again at Wyatt. His brother gave him a look that said, See?

“But how do you know it’s a rotator cuff injury?” Cole asked. Could other people see what she did? If so, he was so screwed.

“That, I’ll admit, was an educated guess based on your age and profession,” she answered. “I’ve only observed your symptoms and haven’t done any scans or tests to confirm. You’ll want to rule out bursitis, tendonitis, adhesive capsulitis, and other possible causes of your shoulder pain, of course.”

Despite what he’d seen this evening and his brother’s assurances, Cole was surprised by Everly’s quick assessment. She looked like she should be out club-hopping, not spouting medical jargon with such an intent expression on her face.

He also realized, since she knew his profession, that she had known who he was the moment she saw him. So why hadn’t she mentioned that before now? Maybe she wasn’t a fan.

“We’ve had scans done,” Wyatt said. “X-rays, an MRI—the whole load.”

He moved over to the desk. Everly stepped to the side as Wyatt reached over to retrieve the large manila envelope resting there. She hit Cole’s leg and nearly toppled onto his lap. Out of instinct, he reached out to help her maintain her balance. His hands ended up on her nicely shaped rear end.

She sprang away like a gazelle fleeing a lion. When she turned to look at him, he realized her cheeks were nearly as red as her hair. Her reaction went a long way toward putting him back on an even keel.

“I don’t bite,” he said with a grin. “Come and have a seat.”

He patted the cushion beside him. She looked at it warily, then moved her gaze to him. He patted the cushion again. Her lips moved on a whispered comment of some kind as she stepped around his legs and sat down. It was a small victory, but he felt better.

When he turned to look at her, he caught her scent, a unique fragrance that reminded him of whipped vanilla cream and frosted wildberries. She met his gaze. The combination of her nearness, her scent, and the cautious look in her lovely eyes had his whole body reacting.

Oh, this was such a bad idea.
