During their travels, Tate had met other Mercesti like Zachariah and his chosen class leaders. But then there were Mercesti like these, she thought sourly, bringing up her nunchucks to block a slicing sword. Mercesti who refused to fall in line with Zachariah’s leadership. Mercesti who thought they should have the right to take anything they wanted, including the lives of any Estilorians who got in their way.

Mercesti who stood between her and her wedding day.

This group was larger than most of the others had been, Tate observed as she used Tiege’s bent knee to launch herself at another opponent. They were also more trained and organized.

Their leader was a tall, dark-skinned male named Cain. Zachariah had barely approached Cain and introduced himself before the aggressive male and his followers raised their weapons to fight. It seemed they had already heard of Zachariah’s ascension to elder and had been seeking him out to challenge him. Now, Cain and Zachariah were battling across the forest clearing where the combat had initiated.

Fighting this group was the last thing Tate had wanted, though. She had even asked Zachariah to pass them by. After all, she, Zachariah, Tiege, Ariana, and the Mercesti who had been invited to the wedding were on their way to the protected area surrounding her family’s home. Her mother and aunts were all waiting for them to arrive to begin the celebration.

Her stubborn avowed could not be swayed, however. Tate wasn’t actually that upset about the delay. She was proud of Sparky’s determination to clean up his class and integrate them with the nine other Estilorian classes. But lord, she was tired.

She had lost count of the number of small battles they had waged since Eirik’s defeat. It felt as though they finished one battle, got a few hours of sleep, and headed on to the next. Yes, there were days when they met up with friendly Mercesti and took some time to introduce themselves and get to know them, but those moments hardly made up for the time they were fighting.

We’ll wrap this up soon enough, Beautiful.

Tate heard her avowed’s thought as she spun out of the way of an axe’s downward swing. Her gaze lifted to Zachariah’s across clearing. She realized she had unintentionally broadcasted her thoughts to him.

I know, Sparky, she returned.

If she could keep herself focused, she privately added.

Deceive (An Estilorian Novel)

Prologue

They had kept her prisoner for thirteen years, and now they would pay.

Metis kept to the shadows, stalking her prey. She had learned patience during her long imprisonment. If she hadn’t acted with such impulsiveness during Erick’s battle all those years ago, she would never have been captured. It was learning that hard lesson that ultimately contributed to her escape.

Oh, she knew the value of patience now. Yes, she did.

“Daddy! Daddy! Look at me!”

Metis followed the sound of the bright, cheerful voice and peered through the thick foliage surrounding the Mercesti base on the mainland. Her thirst for vengeance had led her to this place. She wanted to destroy the elders—rip their flesh from their bones and their hearts from their chests—but she couldn’t get to Central, a heavily secured area reinforced with protective enchantments, and all of the elders lived there.

All but one.

“That’s good, Ryder,” a deep male voice replied to the first, drawing Metis’ attention.

Her nostrils flared when she spotted Zachariah, the Mercesti elder. The tall, muscular male with the wild-looking blond hair and intense red eyes hadn’t changed in thirteen years. He still wore a serious expression…an expression Metis imagined was even more dour than usual because word had surely spread about her escape.

He was speaking intently with an equally large male covered in colorful tattoos. Derian, she recalled, the Mercesti commander. Both males looked grim, speaking in hushed tones that didn’t quite reach her.

They’re afraid of me, she thought with dark amusement. They know I’m likely to come here. But they won’t expect me so soon.

“But, Daddy, you’re not watching!”

The whine drew her attention to the young male with dark hair and blue-green eyes who stood behind Zachariah wielding a wooden sword with a fierce frown on his face. Metis was unfamiliar with children and had no guess as to his age, but it was clear enough when Zachariah turned to address the small boy that they were father and son.

“I’m in the middle of a conversation, Ryder,” Zachariah said to the young male. “You’re supposed to be with Isaac and Liam. They’re training with Uncle Tiege. I’ll come and watch you when I’m done here.”

“Nuh-uh,” the boy pouted, glowering up at his father. “You’ll come’n see Isaac ‘n Liam ‘n I’ll just sit there.”

The Mercesti elder sighed and squatted so he was at eye-level with his son. “Ryder, we’ve talked about this. You’re not even five yet. Your brothers are older and more experienced than you.”

“But I can do it, Daddy!”

The boy swung his wooden sword, nearly cracking Zachariah in the side of the head. Zachariah managed to block the blow with his forearm, but the loud smack of the wood striking him could be heard even as far as Metis’ position. She edged closer, moving so she could spy on them from around a wide medeina tree.

“Ryder, that’s enough,” Zachariah said sharply, getting to his feet with the sword in his hand. “You’re going to hurt someone with this.”

Metis watched the boy’s wide, long-lashed eyes fill with tears. His cheeks flushed with color as he stomped his foot.

“Give it back!” he insisted.

“No,” Zachariah replied in a firm voice. When the boy began to wail, Zachariah reached up to pinch the bridge of his nose. “Ryder, go to your brothers like you’ve been told. I’ll bring you your sword when I’m done speaking with commander Derian.”

“But—” the boy protested.

Now, Ryder.”

Whatever the boy saw on his father’s face had him closing his mouth on his next protest. He kicked a rock and turned as though he was about to leave.

For some reason, Metis felt compelled to follow the young male. Perhaps it was because in that moment, he shared her fury toward his father.

She could also admit to being curious about him. She had heard about children, but this was the closest she had ever actually been to one. After all of the years that her creator, Tethys, had spent attempting to form children, Metis couldn’t deny a fascination with them.

“Daddy!”

Before Metis had taken more than a step, a new young voice made her look back in Zachariah’s direction. This voice was younger…sweeter, somehow. It sounded absolutely ecstatic.

As she turned, Metis caught sight of a yellow blur as it charged the Mercesti elder. Zachariah dropped the wooden sword just in time to intercept the small figure. A high-pitched giggle filled the air as he lifted the bundle in yellow and tossed it, catching the laughing child on the way down.

“You, too, Eden?” Zachariah gave the child—a female, Metis realized—a stern look that didn’t seem to bother her in the least. “How did you escape your mother?”

“Again,” Derian added, reaching out to tug on one of the child’s burnished gold curls.

“I need Daddy kisses,” the girl declared.

Metis watched as the child reached out and lifted her little hands to her father’s cheeks, then drew him close enough that their noses touched. She wiggled her head so that their noses brushed against each other, laughing as she did. Her father issued another sigh, but Metis saw the tender expression on his face.

The little girl—Eden, Metis thought to herself—leaned closer to her father’s ear and whispered, “Where’s Nyx?” loud enough for Metis to hear.

“Probably hiding,” Zachariah responded, causing Eden’s expression to fall.

“We’ll hunt for her later, little one,” Derian told her, retrieving her bright smile.

“‘Kay!” she cheered, bouncing in her father’s arms.

Metis wondered if children were hard of hearing. They seemed to shout every word.

Zachariah pressed a kiss to his daughter’s forehead. “Now stay out of trouble while I talk with commander Derian,” he said in a gruff voice.

The child laughed and nodded, making her blonde curls bob. Hatred burned bright and hot in Metis’ chest as she watched the interaction. While she had been imprisoned, the Mercesti elder had been living a life of pleasure with his avowed…the Kynzesti female named Tate. They and their companions had robbed Metis of thirteen years of her existence.

They didn’t deserve the family they had made. They didn’t deserve happiness.

She was determined to take it from them.

Zachariah’s gaze suddenly shifted to the tree where she stood. Metis darted out of sight and stood absolutely still. She had to force herself not to flee and reveal herself. Fear had her heart thudding in her chest.

Her own reaction infuriated her. He would not hold that kind of sway over her, she silently vowed.

Soon enough, he would be the one who was terrified.

“Daddy, that’s not fair!”

Metis dared another glance and watched the boy, Ryder, rush back and tug on his father’s tank top. She was relieved when Zachariah’s attention turned from her position.

“Eden should be with Mommy,” the boy said, glaring at his sister. “She’s inta-ruptin’ you, too!”

“Enough, Ryder.” Zachariah lowered Eden to the ground, brushing his hand absently over her hair in a way that confirmed to Metis that he held affection for her. “Take your sister with you. Uncle Tiege will keep an eye on you both until I finally finish this bloody conversation.”

Ryder’s eyes widened. “You’re not s’posed to say bloody, Daddy. I’m tellin’ Mommy.”

Metis didn’t hear Zachariah’s response. She was too focused on the smaller female, who had apparently lost interest in the conversation. The child bent down and picked up the wooden sword that was nearly the same size as she was, gave it a curious look, then tossed it back to the ground. As Derian wisely bent to pick up the sword to keep it out of reach, the girl skipped away.

Right to Metis.

In an instant, Metis’ plans changed. She realized that she didn’t have to kill the Mercesti elder to get her revenge. During her imprisonment, she had learned about the sentiment Estilorians harbored for each other. She had learned how to use that kind of useless emotion to manipulate her captors and escape.

She knew she could take something from Zachariah. Something that would hurt just as much as peeling his flesh or ripping out his heart.

Maybe even more.

Just as Derian started after the child, Metis stepped out from behind the tree. She was watching the little girl, but registered that the Mercesti commander hesitated. The child’s gaze lifted to Metis as she stopped in front of her. She started to smile as Metis reached for her, but then her expression froze. Realizing the child sensed danger, Metis acted quickly, grabbing her before she could run.

“Eden!”

Zachariah’s desperate cry had all activity in the area ceasing. Metis met his gaze an instant before she teleported with the screaming child in her grasp, and she knew she had been right. It was the Mercesti elder who was now terrified.

Because he knew he would never see his little girl again.

EXCERPT

As I looked around, I noticed Liam walking over to Aliyah. He looked handsome as usual, in jeans and a V-neck shirt, his hair perfectly tousled and his mischievous grin in place. I watched as he spoke to Aliyah, making her turn her attention from the conversation from the girl in her biology class, to him. I watched his face as he flirted, and knew the moment she shot him down. Liam tried to look as if it didn’t matter, but I could tell that almost three years of rejection was starting to get to him, and as he walked past her into the kitchen, I wondered why he didn’t give up.
“Jeb, can I cut in for a minute?” an achingly familiar voice said to my left, causing me to forget about Liam and Aliyah, and turn toward Craig.
“No,” I said loudly, before Jeb could respond, then growled in frustration when Jeb turned and walked away. “Ugh, what do you want?”
I didn’t wait for him to respond, instead turning on my heel and walking down the hall toward the bathroom.
“I want to know why you’re here. Why you keep coming to my frat parties, when there are a million other parties that you can go to. Do you like torturing me?” Craig asked from right behind me.
I whirled suddenly, causing him to stop so abruptly he had to steady himself with one hand on the wall, spilling a healthy stream of beer onto his shoes. We both watched as the gold liquid hit his nice, clean loafers.
I trailed my gaze up to his, an apology on my lips, but froze when I saw the anger on his face.
“You don’t want to talk to me anymore… Fine! You don’t want to be friends… Whatever, I’m happy to accommodate you.” Craig began walking closer as he talked, causing me to step back. “But your actions show something different. I think you miss me, you just don’t know how to make things right between us, and that’s why you’re always here. Just admit it, Gwen… Talk to me,” The anger left his voice as he pleaded with me, and although I knew what he was saying was true, I couldn’t bring myself to take the olive branch he was extending.
“Get over yourself,” I responded instead, lifting my chin and meeting his eyes haughtily. “I like to come here because you guys have the best booze, and the hottest guys.”
Craig took another step, and when my back hit the wall, I put my hands on my hips, refusing to back down at the look of hurt that flashed across his face.
“So you’re just here to get drunk and fuck my brothers, is that it?” he replied, and I had to stop myself from flinching at his crassness. I knew I was hurting him, but I needed to preserve my heart, and this was the only way I knew how to do it.
“Yup.”
“Well, don’t let me keep you,” he replied, stepping to the side.
His affable tone just pissed me off more.
“Don’t be such a hypocrite. You go home with random girls all the time, and you certainly drink your share of alcohol…”
Craig stepped back in front of me, blocking my way, and leaned his face down into mine, the anger practically vibrating off of him.
“Don’t give me that double standard bullshit. If I thought for one minute you were drinking and sleeping with random guys because you were enjoying college and sowing your wild oats, or whatever the fuck you call it, I’d be all for it. I’d be your biggest damn champion… But we both know that’s not it. You’re doing this for my benefit, to punish me. And the shit of it is, I have no idea what I’m being punished for, but I can tell you one thing, you’re not happy. You know it, and I know it, and I just wish you’d wake the fuck up and let me help you.”
His words pierced my skin and I suddenly felt like a cornered, injured animal, and all I wanted to do was fight back.
I was about to scream in his face, and maybe start kicking, when Liam and Aliyah came up behind us and Liam put a hand on Craig’s shoulder.
“Hey, brother, ease up,” Liam said with a forced chuckle. “The entire party can hear your squabble.”
Craig turned to his side and I squeezed past him, taking Aliyah’s hand so she could lead me down the hall.
“Gwen,” Craig called, his voice gentle and full of regret. “Meet you next Friday at three?”
I nodded, then turned and walked away.
We were going home for Brock and Victoria’s baby shower. Even though I didn’t give him the time of day for most of the year, we always drove back home for special events and holidays together. It started when Shelly and Cal had their first baby. Craig had been so excited to be an uncle, and I really wanted to be there to see the baby, so I’d agreed to go with him. After that, it just became a habit. I knew I should put a stop to it, I’d been telling myself that for years, but it was the only time that I let myself be with him, and not fight the entire time. We both loved our family and friends, and since they were so closely intertwined, it would be silly not to go together.
Then there was the fact that I still attended all of his baseball games. Sure, I took pictures and submitted them to the school paper, but no matter how many times I told myself I was going to stay home, and stop going to his games, I always went.
If I was honest with myself, I’d realize that one of the main reasons I never bought a car, was that if I did, I would no longer have a reason to carpool back home with Craig. And, if I stopped going to his games, I’d not only be breaking a promise I made to him eight years ago, but I’d miss the joy and pride I always felt when I watched him play.

It was a good thing I hadn’t been honest with myself in over three years.

Release Day Blitz + #Giveaway: RISE OF THE FAIRE-AMANTI by Raine Thomas

It’s launch day for Rise of the Faire-Amanti (Ascendant Series #3), and I’m is celebrating with a big giveaway! Read on for more details…

Book Blurb:

Stranded in the desolate Dark Lands, Kyr and Ty share a bittersweet reunion. Alametria lies on the brink of darkness. Their people are still reeling, believing she’s dead at Ty’s hands. With no other choice, many have turned to the Guardians and Advisor Vycor for guidance, never suspecting they’re being led to slaughter.

Kyr and Ty encounter overwhelming challenges in their fight to save their people: a deadly environment, murderous Marauders, and powerful protections preventing them from reaching the palace. When the journey itself could mean their deaths, the one thing that keeps them going is the thought of bringing VycorDane to justice.

Facing a battle on multiple fronts, lacking resources, and significantly outnumbered, Kyr and Ty must rely on each other in the race to save their planet. Will they beat the odds and restore peace to Alametria…or will Vycor’s evil destroy them all?

Excerpt:

Turning so he faced Kyr, he lifted a gloved hand to her shoulder. Are you sure you want to do this?

She nodded, but he saw the rapid pulse in her neck belying her fear. They were both struggling to ignore the flight reflex pounding in their minds.

He considered walking to the storage bay and pulling out the sleeping pallets Gren had packed for their use, but he worried that taking even that much time would have them both abandoning this plan and giving in to the protections. Instead, he bent down and kissed her.

The feel and taste of Kyr shoved every other thought to the far corners of his mind. Although it had only been a few days since he last touched her like this, he felt like a starving man being offered a sumptuous buffet. Her soft lips eased open beneath his, begging him to deepen the kiss. He obliged, rubbing his tongue against hers as she tasted him just as thoroughly.

He ached to touch her. He broke away from her long enough to yank off his goggles and gloves. She hastily did the same. As if of one mind, they didn’t stop there, stripping out of their flight gear with quick, purposeful movements. When Ty was done, he helped Kyr remove the rest of her clothing. Then they came together in a mad rush, their mouths once again finding each other in a searing kiss.

Open your mind to me, Kyr thought. Only to me.

Yes. Only you.

He barely processed her demand over the raging need coursing through his body, but understood what she wanted. Since their first time joining here in the Dark Lands, he had learned that he had to keep a barrier between them when they made love. If he didn’t, they ran the risk of their joined power spiraling out of control like it had that time. On the more practical side, there was also the fact that if he allowed himself to feel everything she felt, their lovemaking would be over practically before it started.

Trust in us, she encouraged him as her hands ran along the muscles of his arms and chest.

Heedless of the consequences, he did as she asked, fully opening his mind to hers.

EXCERPT

Jesse pressed into the seat next to him. “Hey, Alex. How’s it hangin’?” The blue scrubs she wore barely contained all of her six-foot-two and well over two hundred pounds. Jessibelle Yanaha Macallan was beautiful, sexy, and one of the smartest microbiologists Alex knew. He liked her even more because she’d been a rebellious youth at the University of Arizona, once being jailed as a grad student for protesting sanctions against Iraq. She was responsible for decoding parts of the Ebola DNA and was helping him transplant viral codes from smallpox-like monkey viruses to the middle of Ebola DNA.

She always liked to sit close, too close. Okay, maybe he liked it a little.

“Hi, Jesse. I’m good. Except I think my mind is still an hour behind.” Truth was, even his eyes ached. But he had to get going. Work meant money. “Give me a few minutes, though, and I’ll be multitasking as usual. Right now, how about some of that good old Colombian?”

“Sure, baby.” Her smooth voice was nonchalant. “But you know I don’t bring any of that stuff with me to the job.”

“Right…just pass the coffee.”

Macallan was a weird last name for an Apache. She’d explained it as a Scottish trapper hired by James Kirker to tame the northern New Mexico Jicarilla Apaches. Raised on the rez, she hated government oppression. She’d told him Yanaha came more from distant Navajo relatives, and translated to One who confronts her enemies. Fit her perfectly. Y this. Y that…Oh, yeah. Alex also loved it that “Y” fit right in with the D.C. acronym game. The best part: it was only one initial.

RISE OF THE FAIRE-AMANTI Available for Pre-Order + Exclusive Sneak Peek!

This is a very exciting day for me, my friends! I’ve never had one of my books available for pre-order. While this may not seem like a big deal, it is for me. In my mind, it helps build anticipation. It also put me on a real writing deadline for the first time ever, which was completely nuts. Ultimately, though, I’m so glad I’ve had this experience!

Let’s hop right into the book details so you can get your pre-ordered copy of Rise of the Faire-Amanti…then, as a special “thank you,” I’m posting the entire first chapter for your reading enjoyment. Here we go:

Blurb:

And now, a Sneak Peek at Rise of the Faire-Amanti

Chapter One

“Your cousin Sem is dead,” Vycor sneered.

Ty tried to move, but he couldn’t. Vycor’s Mynders had ambushed him. He was strapped to one of the seats in the palace’s Ritual Chamber…the same seat he had sat in while he mentally tortured Vycor just a couple of lunar cycles before.

They had been so close to defeating the Advisor. His demise had been within their grasp. There had been just one misstep.

One deadly misstep.

“He died screaming for mercy,” Vycor said as he laid out implements beside the altar in the center of the chamber. “He cursed your name, TaeDane. He knew it was your fault that he suffered so long before death claimed him.”

“You’re lying,” Ty growled. He knew Sem had gotten out of the palace.

He had to have gotten out.

“Am I?”

At a silent command, one of the Mynder guards standing in the chamber brought forth a basket. Ty’s stomach clenched when he saw the blood leaking out of the basket’s bottom and dripping onto the floor, but he controlled his reaction so Vycor couldn’t see his wariness. Without any preamble, the guard dumped the basket at Ty’s feet. Sem’s head flopped out, splashing gore onto Ty’s boots.

“He was still alive when we dismembered him,” Vycor said conversationally, his gaze on Ty’s face. “In fact, his ‘member’ was one of the first things I cut off. I’ll have to be even more inventive when I kill you.”

Horror blended with rage and grief, gripping Ty around the throat as he stared at Sem’s ghastly expression. Forcing his gaze away from it, he tried to reach out with his mind. He had to connect with Kyr. He had to warn her.

But his thoughts were blank. No one was hearing them.

“Oh, I’m hearing them,” Vycor assured him. “I’m stronger now than you ever were. You’ll admit it before I’m done with you.”

Ty shook his head. This couldn’t be. He was the Faire-Amanti. He and Kyr were paired. They were fated to be together. Their abilities were stronger than Vycor’s. Than anyone’s.

Weren’t they?

“You are such a fool,” Vycor laughed. “I can’t wait to have you pleading and sniveling like your cousin did. I imagine you’ll feel as though you’ve died at least twice once I finish with your amanti. You do feel everything she does, don’t you?”

Ty went utterly still. His heart dropped, then thudded painfully against his breastbone. His palms tingled with panicked sweat. Once again, he sent out a desperate thought to Kyr. He had to protect her.

“She can’t hear your thoughts,” Vycor said, his smile lethal. “But fear not.”

The chamber doors opened, admitting more Mynders. Ty’s head jerked in their direction. Then it moved from side to side in slow denial.

“Ah, here she is,” Vycor said, watching as the Mynders placed Kyr’s unconscious form on the altar. “This will be fun.”

Ty strained against his bonds as Vycor reached for the fastenings of Kyr’s lightweight armor. Although he had vowed not to let Vycor see any signs of weakness, he shouted, “Don’t touch her!”

“Oh, I intend to do much more than just touch her.” Vycor smirked as the first of Kyr’s armor hit the floor. “I intend to take her as many times as I please in whatever ways I please, and I imagine a number of the Mynders in this room would enjoy a turn, too.”

Ty didn’t have to look around to sense the lecherous expressions of the guards over Vycor’s dark promise. His muscles burned and protested as he pulled against his bonds. He watched helplessly as Vycor completely disrobed Kyr and secured her wrists and ankles to the far corners of the altar.

“We can’t enjoy ourselves if she sleeps through it, can we?” Vycor said.

He reached over into the satchel on the side table and pulled out a small snifter. Removing the top, he waved it under Kyr’s nose. Ty’s own nose burned as Kyr jerked away from the source of the pungent smell. Her low moan sent fear clawing through him.

“Leave her alone!” Ty begged. “Take me instead!”

Vycor chuckled. “Oh, we’ll get to that. But first…”

He slapped Kyr. The sharp strike made Ty flinch. Kyr gasped and fully opened her eyes. As realization set in, her gut iced in terror. Ty felt it blend with his own.

“Stop!” he cried hoarsely. He knew it was useless and only served to spur Vycor on, but he couldn’t stop himself. “I’ll do anything you ask!”

“It’s too late for that,” Vycor replied, removing his robe and revealing his heavy state of arousal.

“What are you doing?” Kyr choked out. Chains rattled as she tried to free herself. Her gaze moved to Ty. “Ty, help me!”

I can’t, he thought uselessly, but he pulled hard enough on his own bonds to feel blood trickling along his wrists. His eyes blurred as Vycor climbed up onto the altar.

Now, I’ll finally take everything from you, TaeDane, Vycor thought.

“Help me!” Kyr screamed. “Ty!”

*     *     *

Ty jerked awake. Sweat coated his skin. Moisture that might not have been sweat dripped along his temples onto his pillow. His tensed muscles slowly eased as his mind accepted that he’d been dreaming.

Again.

The dream had started not long after Kyr met up with him in the Dark Lands. At first, it was nothing more than flashes of images and a sense of defeat and powerlessness. With each new incarnation of the dream, though, more details appeared. The sequence of events never changed. It just got more and more vivid and intense.

He reached shakily for Kyr, who still slept soundly beside him. Battling the sharp blade of desolation that threatened to slice into his soul, he pulled her against him and wrapped her in his arms. She slept on, oblivious to his torment.

The light, familiar fragrance of her hair helped calm him, but not much. The fear from the dream haunted him, and would stay with him for a long time to come. There would be no more sleep for him that night.

How could he sleep when he suspected that such a specific recurring scene wasn’t a dream, but a vision of things yet to come?

Blurb:

Raised to be the “perfect” wife, Victoria has spent her days maintaining her impeccable outward appearance and her nights mingling with the rich and entitled. When her engagement to Scott ended, Victoria thought she’d be rid of him and his circle of friends forever, but a chance encounter with Brock will change not only the way she sees him, but the way she sees herself.

Brock is a man who’s happy and content with his life. A surrogate parent to his now-adult brothers, he spends his days running the company he built himself and his nights playing in his brothers’ local band. When he runs into Victoria in the bar after a show, sparks unexpectedly fly, and he’s interested in seeing where it goes.
But can the man who’s happy with his life, convince the woman who always wants more, to give him a shot with only 15 Minutes on the clock?
EXCERPT

I was waiting for my beer when the hint of something spicy and expensive wafted toward me. I turned my head to see the back of a woman. She wasn’t dressed for a night at the bar. At least, not a bar like this one. Even from behind she looked like she belonged in a country club. Her skirt was long enough to be demure, but the way it hugged her ass clued me in to the fact that the ass was magnificent, no matter what the package. Her blouse was tucked in the skirt, and she wore stockings with her high heels. Definitely not jiving with the jeans and T-shirts most of the other patrons were

wearing.

I let myself fantasize that the stockings led to garters underneath that fancy skirt, as her perfume did crazy things to my senses. I felt my dick harden as my fantasies got away from me, then the bartender interrupted by saying, “Here’s your beer, Brock,” and I saw her stiffen before she turned to look at me.Her hair was dark brown and fell past her shoulders, straight and silky. Her face was striking. It could have been beautiful, if she’d ever fucking smile … Instead, it always looked pinched and unhappy.

“Hello, Brock,” Victoria said dryly. Her eyebrow rose as if she thought I was standing next to her on purpose.

Snooty Bitch.

“Tori,” I tipped my beer to her in greeting, suppressing my grin as I waited for her reaction. I knew I’d get one. “Here for the show?”

“It’s Victoria, and no, I’m not here for the show,” she answered. Even when she spoke she looked constipated.

“Why are you here then?” I asked, not because I cared, just to irritate her.

She huffed out a breath, the loss of control almost cute, then spat out, “Not that it’s any of your business, but I’m supposed to be meeting my sister. She hasn’t shown up yet.”“I didn’t know you had a sister,” I replied before taking a pull of my beer.

Victoria watched my mouth as I drank, then my throat as I swallowed, and my dick jumped back to life of its own free will. Shit, maybe it’d been too long.I grinned when she looked up and saw that I’d caught her looking, and she scowled, “Why would you know that I have a sister? You don’t know the first thing about me.”

I stepped a bit closer, inserting myself in her space, and when she realized she couldn’t back away, she squared her shoulders and glared at me.

“I could get to know you,” I murmured suggestively, close enough for her to feel my breath on her cheek. She flinched slightly, but maintained her stiff posture.“Why would you want to do that?” Victoria asked, her voice almost vulnerable.

Then laughter off by the dance floor grabbed her attention, and I knew she was looking over at Gaby’s table.

She pulled back and looked up into my face, and I was surprised to see that her eyes were so blue that they were almost purple.

“Don’t think just because we’re rejects of your buddies over there, we have anything in common.”

I turned my head to look deliberately at my friends, then back at her and said deeply, “I’m no one’s reject, Tori, I can promise you that.” Then I tilted my head to look at her, curious. “Are you still hung up on Scott?”

I didn’t know why, but I held my breath as I waited for her response.

She didn’t disappoint when she curled her lip and said, “Absolutely not. If he’d rather be with a mutt than a thoroughbred, that’s his problem.”

I chuckled at her haughty words and replied darkly, “You really do have a stick up your ass, don’t you. I don’t know why I like it, Tori.” I inched closer as I spoke, stopping when my chest brushed hers, and she had to crane her neck to look at me. “But I do. I’d like to help you remove it.”

Her expression turned incredulous and she asked, “Are you hitting on me?”

“I must be doing something wrong if you have to ask,” I replied cockily.“Why?” That vulnerability flashed again, causing a fire to flick in my belly, then she extinguished it when her face pinched back up again and she asked, “Do you want to make them jealous?”

Maybe she was more hung up on Scott and Gaby than I’d thought. She had been engaged to Scott after all. They’d had a long-term relationship, so it would only make sense that it would take her longer to get over it than me.

Still, there was something about her bitchy attitude and that tight little ass that made me want a taste, no matter the circumstances.

“It could be about revenge, if that’s what you want.” I lowered my head farther and gently took the soft lobe of her ear into my mouth.

The taste was fleeting, but it was potent. Especially coupled with her astonished gasp.

I pulled away, giving her room to breath and think, drinking beer as I watched her thoughts dance across her face. I’d definitely succeeded in confusing her.

The sound of my name being called had me looking up, and I nodded when Fast Eddie indicated it was time for us to go on.

“I have to get on stage now,” I said softly. Victoria looked up at me, then at the stage, confusion on her face.

“On stage?”

I nodded but didn’t explain.

“Hang around, watch the show … I’ll find you after.” I could tell she was ready to bolt, so I gave her one last shove, lowering my voice to say, “Just give me fifteen minutes, Victoria. Fifteen minutes and I’ll convince you to give this a shot.” I gestured between the two of us as I spoke. When she opened her mouth, I put a finger up to silence her. “No illusions, Tori. I know you’ve probably never been with a man like me, but don’t worry, I’m not offended. I don’t expect you to fall in love and take me home to meet Daddy.” Her eyebrow cocked again and I laughed; damn, but she sure was a spoiled brat.

I leaned down once more, my voice low and rough in her ear, and said, “No strings, no expectations, just pure pleasure.” I stood and finished with, “I’ll see you after the show.” Then turned to find my brothers. I was in the mood to rock the house.

Release Day Blitz: Pathogen by E.L. Loraine

What if the government doesn’t want a cure?

A
blinding light in the Southwestern sky changed everything. Nothing worked
anymore and all Alexis could do was hope that her boyfriend and fellow
scientist Jackson would still head to New Orleans for their week end together.

She
couldn’t help thinking the worldwide pockets of viral outbreaks and this were
somehow connected. If she and Jackson combined
their efforts just maybe they could stop this before it became an epidemic.

Now
she was stuck on the road alone and it wasn’t long before she
realized
it was too late; they couldn’t out run a virus. If the world was over run all
they
could do now all they could do was to figure
out how to survive and keep the uninfected from becoming, mindless, flesh
eating monsters. Now there’s something else, a mutation a strain of virus the
government doesn’t want to cure and they want Alexis and Jackson to help them
harness it. They aren’t about to let that happen.

The
world and character building of best-selling author E.L. Loraine with the
specialty horror telling skills of Tim Frasier has combined in this
 dystopian –
Pathogen. It’s chilling in an all too believable way.

Here are a few short Teasers from
Pathogen!!

Teaser #1
While Jackson’s exterior was the definition of calm and control,
he was screaming inside. He had to get Alexis out of New Orleans. He approached
the compound commander, Major Johnston, and made a calculated plea.
“I need to get to New Orleans. One of the world’s top
pathologists is there, and would be invaluable in fighting whatever we’re up
against.”
Teaser #2
Alexis frowned, gun at the ready, and continued up the stairs,
alleviating further squeaking by positioning her feet on the extreme sides of
the treads.
She stopped at the landing and stood there holding her breath,
listening, trying to decide what to do. Moving to the door to her right, sure
the whimpering sound was coming from that room, she slowly reached out to the
knob.
In one movement she twisted the knob, and shoved the door hard.
The door swung to her right, banging on the wall behind it. Lexy moved through
the opening and into the interior of the room with her gun close to her body,
rotating first to the left and then to the right.
Nothing.
Teaser #3
She moved further inside, aiming the pistol back and forth, as
she looked through the room.
She gulped and took herself in hand, preparing inwardly for the
next move.
Stepping to the closet door she took another quick breath,
gripped the knob and pulled it open.

Immediately, something inside the closet screeched and Lexy
dropped down to one knee, gun extended, with a screech of her own.

I grew up in a small northern Minnesotan town, married my high
school sweetheart, had two beautiful children and as soon as we could, we moved
to a warmer climate. I have worked with my husband building and decorating
custom homes for years. After loving every kind of vampire book, movie, and
series, I decided that I wanted to know more. I can write a book I thought, how
hard can that be? Well….very hard. But I stuck to it and finished my first book
Royal Blood Chronicles Book One, Katrina, The Beginning, in August 2009. There
are now nine books in that series; The Protectors, The Dark Prince, Cain, the
Quest, Bloodline and Legacy, Redemption and Destiny, and book nine Sabine, with
book ten- Power of the Secret -out this fall.
I’ve also started to write mystery/suspense contemporary adult
romances under my E.L. Loraine brand. The first release is Corporate Ties, A
Silken Ties Novel, the second a sweeter romance – Western Escape. A second
Silken Ties Novel will be released in August 2014.

The feedback has been great. I have also released Phantom Lives – Collier, and
new paranormal series, book two of that series Phantom Lives – Power, book
three to be out around Christmas. I also have just published book one of my
Shifter Chronicles – Green River. My parents always told me that I could do
anything that I wanted, work hard, study, and do it right. I believe that and
live that way every day.

I started writing this new vampire series for teens and their
moms because I myself wanted something different to read. I was tired of all
the modern versions of vampire books, there had to be more to these long lived
beings. Where had they been, what had they seen? I wanted, no I NEEDED to know
more so Royal Blood Chronicles was born! Strong female characters and action
and adventure mixed with romance, friendship and a historical backdrop. Phantom
Lives continues with another strong female character, which is very important
to me. Phantom Lives is a modern day, paranormal romance, filled with mystery,
magical places and beings.

Goodreads:
A Red Coat PR Interview!
RCPR: Your newest book, PATHOGEN releases onOctober 28th.  Tell us a little about it.
Elizabeth: I was invited to write a short story for an anthology and worked with Tim Frasier on a piece. We just clicked, and I asked him if he would write this story with me, an idea I’d had for a while. Two scientists, who are in a long distance relationship are set to meet each other again in New Orleans when the world suddenly changes. Pathogen has been released and an EMP has taken out almost all communications, electrical and power. Now the main characters, Alexis and Jackson are trying to get to each other. The government and other factions also want them to stabilize the Pathogen, if not cure it. Both sides want to control it for their own purposes. So they, along with a band of people who they’ve joined or helped along the way are on the run.
RCPR: I have to say, your cover is a mixture of stunning and freaky.  What inspired the idea for the cover and who was your designer?
Elizabeth: Conzpiracy Digital Arts does most of my covers, he’s amazing, but horror is his specialty. I only have to give him a concept and then get out of the way. This scientist has been infected. Because it’s true; you can’t run from a virus.
RCPR: Your tag line, “What if the government doesn’t want a cure” is amazing!  Do you personally believe in government conspiracies or does it just make for a good book?
Elizabeth:  Oh I love a good conspiracy and I believe they go on. Yes I believe not every faction of the government knows everything about the others. It’s scary, that’s what makes it good.
RCPR: PATHOGEN is a co-written venture that you partnered with Tim Frasier on.  How did you find the process of co-writing to be?
Elizabeth: It was amazing and while Tim wasn’t sure if it would work it has and our style and our imaginations mess seamlessly. It started out by Tim writing Jackson’s part and I wrote Lexy’s point of view. Once they were together however we just took turns, each writing around 1000 words a day and passed it back and forth. We had the first book done in six weeks, the second in an additional five weeks. We wrote a novella, a prequel next and will start the third book next week. I have to say it was soooo fun. It was like Christmas morning every day waiting to read what he’d written and adding to the story.
RCPR: Aside from the horror/thriller genre, what other genre’s have a dabbled in?
Elizabeth: I started writing YA fantasy and paranormal, but now I also write romance/mystery and thrillers too. I find it keeps writing exciting to try new things and engage a new audience.
RCPR: With the new year quickly on approach, are there any new writing goals that you’re thinking of setting for yourself in 2015?
Elizabeth: I am expanding my YA series Royal Blood Chronicles and Phantom Lives as well as my Lillian, a Vampire tale series. We will continue the Pathogen series or maybe a spin off or something new. Silken Ties, the adult romance/thriller series will get two novels next year as well.
RCPR: As an author, the more you write the better you become.  Have you ever been tempted to go back and re-work your first books?  Did you?
Elizabeth: I have been through all of them again yes, and may do it again. You’re always learning so I may do a re-write on the first books again. That’s what’s so great about self publishing, you’re in charge.
RCPR: Do you tend to do a lot of research for your books or do you like to create new rules and history?
Elizabeth: I do a lot of research, but it is fiction after all, so I mix the real history with my fiction. I do the same with anything I’m writing. If it’s about the FBI, the military, government, serial killers, whatever. I do the research. I really enjoy that part of writing.
RCPR: If you could spend a day in any time period in history, which would it be and why?
Elizabeth: I think I’d like to see the early West so mid 1800’s would be my choice, but all history fascinates me. Walk with Louis and Clark.
RCPR: What is your biggest writing pet peeve? Why?
Elizabeth: Writing the dreaded blurb! I hate condensing an entire novel into a two paragraph blurb and I know I’m not the only one.

Did you know there is a Release Party for Pathogen on October 28th from 6pm-9pm EST? No you didn’t well be sure to click the link below so you can join in the fun!

“Is this on?”
Jules’ eyes flick to the small television across the room as she takes her place in the faded velvet wingback chair. Her own face stares back at her from the screen, indicating the camera is indeed working. Out of habit, her hands run over her strawberry blonde hair. She twirls a curl around her finger and brushes her long bangs to the side. Satisfied with her appearance, she takes a deep breath.
“Okay, Hi,” she says softly; her hand lifting in a small wave. “I’m Jules Blacklin from Tyler, Texas. Oh, crap. No, I shouldn’t wave,” she tells herself.
Shimmying backward, she tries to find a comfortable sitting position; her sundress catching against the velvet nap of the seat cushion. With a low sigh, she moves to run her hand between her skirt and the chair. Freeing the fabric, Jules adjusts the dress again and crosses her legs daintily, while stealing another glance at the television screen to check her appearance.
She’d set up the small twenty-inch screen on a side table so she would be able to see herself as a video camera recorded her story. Although now the camera only makes her more uneasy. Sitting here, watching herself speak to nobody makes her question her sanity. It feels like something a crazy person would do.
With a thoughtful eye, she watches herself lean forward and rest her elbow on the armrest, and decides to go with the pose; thinking it makes her look studious.
“Okay, yeah…that’s good,” she speaks aloud.
With a demure nod of her head, she begins again.
“Hi. My name is Jules Blacklin, Hillsdale High class of twenty-fourteen. I’m making this video essay as my contribution to the class of twenty-fourteen time capsule. I…”
She pauses; her mind blanking out for a spell as she smiles into the lens recording her. She takes a moment to steady her thoughts before continuing. “I want to tell you about myself. About what I’ve been through, and what the town of Tyler has been through. Winston Churchill once said, ‘Sure I am of this, that you have only to endure to conquer.’ Rest assured I have endured. I have endured, and now I am ready to conquer.”
Jules gives herself a mental high-five for remembering the quote and releases a deep breath. With her hands clasped, she leans forward in her seat. Her blue eyes stare directly into the red blinking light used to indicate the camera is recording.
“I’m inviting you on a journey. A journey through my senior year. Actually, if you’re watching this, then I’m going to ask you to be a bystander. See, I’m not making this for you. I’m recording this for the ones who didn’t live, the ones I will forever be mindful of. For the ones I knew, the ones I didn’t…and especially for the ones I loved. This is for you.”
Uncrossing her legs, she leans back in the chair again; her eyes continuing to connect with the nameless faces that will someday watch this DVD. She settles back for her long story, her finger tracing the scrolling pattern across her skirt. She gathers herself, her thoughts and memories. It’s only a few moments — a flash of time — but for her, in her mind she sees everything. Once more, her pale gaze meets the lens and she decides where to start.
“Let’s begin with your ending. The last night my life was normal. The last night we were all normal.”
